Ornamental steel requires slightly more attention than aluminum or vinyl, but the maintenance routine is straightforward:
- Annual cleaning — rinse with water and mild soap to remove dirt, pollen, and mildew that can trap moisture against the finish.
- Inspect the powder-coat finish annually for any chips, scratches, or bubbling that could expose bare metal to the elements.
- Touch up damaged areas promptly with a matching rust-inhibiting paint or powder-coat touch-up product to prevent rust from developing.
- Check hardware and welds — inspect hinges, brackets, and gate hardware annually for signs of wear or corrosion.
With consistent basic maintenance, an ornamental steel fence will retain its appearance and structural integrity for many decades.
